We mark the most success UN Global Road Safety Week yet!

The Fourth United Nations Global Road Safety Week has been a massive success! In fact, it has been described as the most successful UN Week yet! From 8-14 May 2017, campaigners, organizations, governments, companies and many others encouraged the world to #SlowDown. Over 1000 events were registered in more than 125 countries; taking place at national and community levels. The world pledged to #SlowDown, we thank you for your important efforts!

Photo contest demonstrates actions by NGOs around the globe to combat speed

In preparation for the Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week, 2017 (8–14 May), the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety has announced the winners of its photo contest promoting the theme of the week: Save Lives—#SlowDown. There were three categories in the contest: Speed Management, #SlowDown, and NGOs at Work (for photos showcasing road safety projects).

#SlowDown Day event in Malaysia celebrated with hundreds of NGOs

As part of the Fifth Global Meeting of the Global Alliance of NGOs for RoaD Safety, a kickoff event took place themed around Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week in May. A speed bump was repainted by school children in the community of Selangor on 4 April as a symbol of the Week’s 2017 theme of speed prevention: #SlowDown.

New infographic from WHO focuses on speed

Countries successfully reducing road traffic deaths have done so by prioritizing safety when managing speed. Among the proven strategies to address speed include: Building or modifying roads to include features that calm traffic; Establishing speed limits to the function of each road; Enforcing speed limits; Installing in-vehicle technologies; Raising awareness about the dangers of speeding.

Managing speed - a new publication from the World Health Organization

In the context of the Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week, WHO has released Managing speed . The document highlights that excessive and inappropriate speed is among the key risks for road traffic deaths and injuries, contributing to around one third of road traffic fatalities in high-income countries and up to one half in low- and middle-income countries.

The 23rd meeting of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) was hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, on 17–18 November 2016.
