Victoriya Chemelevskaya

Physical Education Teacher, Minsk, Belarus

Ms Chemelevskaya is a kindergarten teacher who has championed road safety education in her community and played a central role in bringing inclusive road safety education lessons to disabled and non-disabled children for the first time. In this respect, she took a special responsibility in the project "Disability and mobility: lessons of kindness". The Belarusian Auto Moto Touring Club (BKA) launched the project, supported by EASST, and delivered it in partnership with the Road Traffic Police and the Belarusian Association of Assistance to Children and Young People with Disabilities. The project used a specially adapted version of the EASST Road Safety Education Pack, which includes illustrations of children with disabilities and aims to promote a more inclusive, barrier-free environment for people with disabilities. The project responded to concerns raised in a report on disability, mobility and road risk published by the BKA and EASST which found that the majority of disabled people in Belarus face significant barriers to making even the most basic journeys due to unsafe roads and inaccessible transport. In addition there was little road safety education in schools and no dedicated educational resources for children and young people with disabilities.

Ms Chemelevskaya has risen to this challenge by delivering bespoke lessons to children with a variety of disabilities and special educational needs alongside the non-disabled children at her kindergarten. The sessions teach the children about safe behaviour on the road and raise awareness about how society should provide a barrier-free environment for people with disabilities. This included emphasis on the principles not only of road safety, but also of inclusion and mutual assistance, promoting equal educational opportunities and equal treatment for everyone on the roads. The project reached 700 children and Ms Chemelevskaya constantly showed a creative and innovative approach to teaching road safety to engage her young participants.
