Saul Billingsley

Executive Director, FIA Foundation

Saul Billingsley has played an influential role in global road safety since he began working with the FIA Foundation in 2001. Together with then Foundation boss David Ward, he was a driving force behind the Make Roads Safe campaign, a first ever global campaign calling for road safety to be accepted as a development priority worldwide. As a major part of this work, Mr Billingsley helped devise and advocate for the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety and the first ever Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety. Building on this successful advocacy, Mr Billingsley and the FIA Foundation team helped lead campaigning for road safety to be included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This resulted in two targets being secured in the Health and Cities Goals.

Under Mr Billingsley’s direction, the FIA Foundation has continued to support partners and programming around the world enabling them to carry out vital life-saving work, and is campaigning for road traffic injury to be a child health priority. But, as he says: “For all the progress made on the global agenda for road safety, we need to see real action and results at scale over the next decade. Targets have been set, but we need funding, commitment and of course leadership to achieve them. With our partners we’ll be pushing for this as we head into the next Global Ministerial Conference in Sweden in 2020.”
