Mohammed Adjei Sowah

Mayor of Accra, Ghana

Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Mayor of Accra, Ghana, since March 2017, has a vision of creating a “safe, smart, sustainable and resilient modern city”. Although he is faced with numerous daunting tasks, he is doing remarkably well from the road safety point of view and shows great commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries in Accra.

As a road traffic crash victim himself, he recognises the ripple effect road traffic crashes have on victims and their families, and openly shares his story to create awareness. In November 2018 during the commemoration of the annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, he joined stakeholders in visiting road traffic victims at a hospital where he made donations towards their recovery. He also took the opportunity to speak about risky behaviours on the road, cautioning drivers to obey traffic rules and regulations. In his capacity as Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and with the support of the Bloomberg Philanthropies “Partnership for Healthy Cities”, Mayor Sowah has taken several steps.

Welcoming the collaboration of international and local road safety partners, Mayor Sowah has been instrumental as a force behind the development of both the AMA’s road safety strategy and a pedestrian road safety action plan, developed with guidance from Amend, Bloomberg Philanthropies, SSATP Africa Transport Policy Program, and World Resources Institute. In line with these plans, Mayor Sowah joined the National Road Safety Commission of Ghana to launch a road safety campaign in December 2018 with the aim of sensitizing motorists to slow down and obey posted speed limits to save lives. In addition, he has instigated improvements to intersections around the city to make them safe for pedestrians and provided road safety equipment to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service.
