For over 35 years, David Ward has been a relentless champion for road safety and sustainable transport and has held a number of influential leadership roles in these fields. From 2001 to 2013, Mr Ward was the first Director General of the FIA Foundation. Together with his colleague Saul Billingsley, he was a driving force behind “Make Roads Safe”, a global campaign calling for road safety to be acknowledged as a development priority worldwide. During his period as Director General, the FIA Foundation disbursed over $100 million to a wide variety of projects around the world. In 2009 the FIA Foundation won the HRH Prince Michael of Kent’s Premier International Road Safety Award in recognition of its “outstanding contribution” to global road safety. In 2006, Mr Ward established the Commission for Global Road Safety, serving as its Executive Secretary. The Commission was instrumental in the behind the scenes negotiations which led to the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety and establishment of a UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. In addition, the Commission successfully argued for inclusion of road safety in the new framework of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Currently, Mr Ward is the President and Chief Executive Officer of both the Towards Zero Foundation (TZF) and the Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP). For its work promoting independent consumer safety rating of motor vehicles, Global NCAP was awarded in 2016 the HRH Prince Michael of Kent’s Premier International Road Safety Award in recognition of its “outstanding contribution” to automotive safety. Under his leadership, TZF and Global NCAP are working for a world free from road traffic fatalities and serious injuries by promoting safe and sustainable road transport as well as democratizing vehicle safety. As a life-long campaigner, Mr Ward is a skilled and effective leader. He is a man with a vision and the capacity to mobilize support for that vision, and that has made all the difference to the global road safety and sustainable transport agenda he promotes. David is also President and CEO, Global New Car Assessment Programme.
